 "Had friction issues" 2010-05-15
By Chris Hoare (UK)
The mafrotto 391rc2 tripod head came in a box that proclaimed I should not open it. Having just dragged it around Israel for a week using it as the head on the excellent Giotto GTMT 9340B - 4 Section Pro Aluminium travel Tripod With Two-Way Column I wish I had taken their advise.

The 391RC2 is excellent for photography providing an easy to position base for many photos; though it struggled to remain rigid with a canon 7d / 70-200F2.8 lens mounted out it; the lens sagging down all the time. Using it with my 7D i had hoped it would provide much needed stability when using it for video; unfortunately the friction mounts in the head varied too much when moving the camera horizontally which resulted in video that didn't pan smoothly at all -- far better than hand held but still to judder-y for my liking; the vertical titling motion didn't suffer from this though.

If you are wanting an easy to setup head for photography its definitely an easy to position stable head and a great upgrade for anyone with a simple ball head; for video you may want to look elsewhere

"Excellent, but not every single" 2010-01-28

I am amateur photographer and I use this 391RC2 mounted on Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod with my video camcorder too. I chose it after reading lots of reviews about this firm and it's products and they sounded very good and the price affordable. In November 2009 I paid for this head alone £46 (Amazon). It is my first tripod and head. From the beginning when panning the movement wasn't smooth and sometimes "bumpy" like the rotating part was touching something on it's way. I thought it will dissapear later, but it did not and I decided to send it back to Amazon nearly after 2 months.Through their system it was agreed and firstly I received replacement. The new thing arrived very soon.Actually it looked like somebody's return when I carefully examined it and one of three head movements was to tight for videoing(I guess it was the reason for return before I got it). I changed two parts, sent my first head back to Amazon and now I am happy to have fully and smoothly working Manfrotto 391RC2 head. What I realised that replacement comes from customer returns, maybe not always, but overall I am happy with Amazon and the head, just wanted to tell the potential buyer that even a good name manufacturer sometimes make rubbish.

 "Excellent for lighter systems" 2010-01-05
By Canon
I love Manfrotto kit, always well made and well thought out. I wanted a light head to fit on a 785B tripod (with the standard 'non-removable' head removed and a standard 3/8" thread epoxied in). This makes for a VERY light tripod - most people would say too light - but it's great to carry or strap to a rucksack.

I do use it with some quite heavy lenses (70-200 f2.8) which the head does cope with, but it comes into it's own with something lighter. Smooth, precise, easily adjusted. If you're going to do more than occasional videoing then a longer handle may be more useful, but it is intended to be compact.

"It's not true about Jacks of all Trades" 2009-07-31
By G. Gilpin (Northamptonshire)
I bought this as a replacement for my 486RC2 ball head as I wanted video camera capability as well as photo. It looks like an excellent choice as it copes beautifully with both. Like all Manfrotto stuff it is extremely well made, pretty robust, accurate in holding positions. Can't fault it. I would recommend this head, even if you only had a photo application. And if you're interested in video as well, why carry two heads around when you could buy this?

"Superb quality pan & tilt head" 2009-07-06
By Mrs. Karen Barrett (UK)
I'm very pleased with this product, never having used Manfrotto products it lived up to all the reviews that I researched I can highly recommend this Manfrotto 391rc2 together with the 190prob tripod also by Manfrotto. I'm a well seasoned photographer of many years and specialise in Macro photography and this set up is so easy to use and so versatile
