I chose this tripod from the Giottos range because, whilst it isn't the lightest, it is sturdy and is tall enough for a six foot odd person. Tripods with four section legs may be more compact but they are not as sturdy, an important consideration if you have a heavy camera.
The Giottos is by far the most versatile tripod I have owned. I can't imagine any situation where this tripod would not work. Giottos have thought of everything including a tool kit to tighten up the joints should they ever work loose.

Choosing a tripod is all about compromise, particularly between weight and rigitity. This tripod will support a semi pro or pro spec DSLR plus telephoto lens in most outdoor conditions.
