 "Ultra slick stick!" 2010-05-08
By Mr. D. J. Harper (UK)
I have been looking for a lightweight and compact monopod for some time now, well, ever since I got my new Fuji HS10 that is! I needed some sort of support at the longer end of the cameras zoom lens (30x), that was easy to carry on trips, and could store in my backpack, I was contemplating a tripod, but when I came across the Velbon Slick L 50LX, with it's very sleek design and twist locking mechanism, it looked like the perfect one for me!

When it arrived, I was not disappointed, well made with comfortable grip, and a quick single twist of the rubber foot, extend to the length needed, and another twist to lock, simple! (I say single twist, which it is, but there are 4 moments of resistance, one for each section of the leg, same for tightening up!)

My main concern was usable height with the Manfrotto Monopod Head Quick Release attached, as I'm 6'1", but fully extended it places the camera at a perfect height to my eye for using the EVF (viewfinder).

The twist locking action is the killer feature for me, with no multiple levers sticking out that sometimes slip when locked, the clever cross section works very well and keeps the package looking sleek and slender!

I am looking forward to trying it out in anger next week on the wildlife of the Outer Hebrides, and will update here with my findings!

 "travel monopod" 2010-05-06
By Grafixit (UK)
Bought this with view to squeezing into cabin luggage limitations. Weight and min. length being priority characterestics. I was wary about rigidity when extended, but after a little research opted for this model by Velbon. The stick is certainly compact and light. suprisingly rigid at full extension, though I am unlikely to use the smaller diameter low extension. My only criticism is the 1/4 inch screw is minimal in length and could certainly benefit from at least a 3mm+ extension. The product is well finished and will no doubt become an essential travel companion, small and light enough to hang from a belt or slip in a day sack (maybe even some of the more generous ladies handbags!) Overall pleased with the product, reserving opinion on the screwthread.

"Small, light, and relatively sturdy" 2010-02-03
By Mr. S. Crook (North of the M25)
If you want to take a monopod out for a long walk, you could do a lot worse than this. As the dimensions say, it's compact closed and light. The legs use a twist lock mechanism and slide relatively easily, though they can bind a little bit if you're not careful.

It's not exactly the most solidly made monopod, but that's a price that has to be paid for something that's so small and light without paying a small fortune for some carbon fibre affair. Despite the very thin last leg, it feels sturdy in use, even when fully extended.

Surprisingly, it doesn't come with a size adapter for the head thread, so if you want to attach some types of head (I'm using Manfrotto 494RC2 Ball Head with Friction Control) to it you'll have to buy an adapter for the larger thread.
