 "Very proffesional looking tripod" 2010-05-12

The Hama Star 63 Camera Tripod is an excellent product and clearly was well manufactured to a high standard. The tripod was purchased for one main reason to take photographs with a digitial camera that appeared as near perfect as possible. The tripod has the major advantage of being steady to the point that photos taken will not appear either uneven or not proffesionally looking. Great buy for the amateur photographer.

"A great piece of kit" 2010-03-12

Lets start by saying that cheap doesn't always mean 'tacky'. It is is still possible to get a bargain and this is one of them. I sadly didn't come here first and got stung for twice the price (ouch!). So trust when I say that this price is fantastic. It is very lightweight as you would want and expect, though it has a hook on the bottom of the centre column for adding weights (if you so wish). 3 section legs with self levelling rubber feet. two spirit levels for the perfectionist. It has a very sturdy and secure camera/camcorder mount, which is multi-positional. There is also a section of the mount that can be attached to your cammera permanantly (if you so Wish) to speed up connection. The locking clamps on the legs are perfectly adequate and unless you are very heavy handed, should last an age. the centre column can be wound up on a ratchet mechanism and again is very smooth. Unless you are in excess of 6ft tall, this should serve you well. Mine has a smart copper/bronze colour finish on it, which looks pretty smart also.I gave this 4**** as obviously there are better tripods, if you want to spend a small fortune on one of them. Look after it and it should look after you!!

"A steal at this price!" 2010-02-10
By Deepanjan (India)
My very first tripod arrived today and I'm all agog! Ever since I flew from India last year, the skies have been a bit of a disappointment. Gone are the crystal-clear tropical skies and welcome to a perennial shroud that has rendered my astronomical refractor vestigial. Still, I was nursing a hope that the clouds could be somehow wished away and then my Galileoscope would help me peer into the larger satellites of Jupiter or the magnificent rings of Saturn.

The arrival of my tripod now makes me fully equipped for a night of bliss! My calendar shows me the phases of the moon and weather forecast. My RSS reader tells what to expect in the night sky, Stellarium twins the sky on my computer, my iPod stocks Miles Davis and Liszt to accompany me in my heavenly solitude and my wife stuffs the wardrobe with clothes to keep me toasted in the English chill. I must be living a charmed life!

The Hama Star 63 is really tall, it's actually taller than me when fully extended - vital when you're using a refractor at awkward angles. In fact, the height-advantage might even make the star diagonal dispensable in some cases. I generally wouldn't prefer using the diagonal because of its lateral inversion property.

It took me all of 20 minutes to fully understand the functionality of this tripod and test it with my wife's Sony. It looks sturdy, feels reasonably lightweight and the movement offers no unpleasant jerks. I've read some reviews saying it isn't really a heavy-duty stand, a claim I couldn't possibly repudiate this early. However, I'm reasonably sure I won't ever need to mount an elephant atop the tripod either. A few telescopes, some cameras, maybe a pair of binoculars someday and that's about it.

Apart from the refractor, our camera is expected to take a joy ride perched atop the Hama Star 63 too. In fact, this may well become its main line of duty, what with the constantly overcast skies. No more asking strangers to click me & my wife together. No more solitary pics when we're arm in arm.

Now if only I could vacuum the clouds above!

I think this tripod is very good value for money. It is quite solid and provides good height and has plenty of options for setting up at various angles due to a comprehensive range of controls.

Consequently, I would recommend it for still photography.

However, not for camcorder work - swivel and panning actions are jerky and difficult to control.

As a tripod for still photograpy at a great price, I would give it four stars. But as a tripod for camcorder/cine work, I wouldn't give it any stars at all.
