 "Constantly needs repairing" 2010-07-18

I have lost count of the number of times I have had to repair the pins on the compact flash slot. There is too much "play" in the slot so the pins don't line up properly and a couple of them keep bending. This is then a self perpetuating problem as you can't perfectly straighten them meaning that each time it gets a little worse.



The SD slot works fine though - but that's not much use when your main camera uses CF and you only really wanted it for that in the first place.

Neat, black and works in a nice plug and play way.

Every bay appears as a drive in windows and you can read/write to several cards simultaneously.



One drawback is that sometimes you don't know which device you want to "safely unplug" so I simply don't bother and merely yank out the target memory card; never had any problems so far.



The only problem I had was that the card slots didn't line up perfectly with the front panel meaning inserting cards is a bit tight.



It's good for breathing new life into all those old memory cards that are now too small for use in the camera.

From the spec, this card reader ticks the right boxes- plenty of slots, Vista compatible, internal card reader so it doesn't clutter the desk... However, there are a few things to bear in mind before buying one:



1) The box just contains the reader and four mounting screws. No instructions or indeed any written information.

2) The mounting screws don't fit the holes in the side of the card reader very well.

3) After installation, Vista noticed a new device, but failed to find drivers for it. As this unit completely lacked documentation, there was no indication as to what to do next. Thankfully, it can read cards without drivers, but it does keep popping up a "cannot find drivers" message even when I've told it to ignore this. This is irritating.

4) There is a nasty-looking red LED on the front, which always seems to be switched on.

5) When a card is inserted, Vista sees it as a new disk. The trouble is, it sees about 5 new disks (presumably one for each slot) so you have to guess which one relates to the card that you put in.

6) Possibly the worst feature is the poorly fitting CF card slot. This slot is about twice the height of a CF card, so the card wobbles around in the slot. Worse than this, when I first inserted a CF card, it didn't fit and I managed to bend one of the very weak pins in the card reader.



Summary: it's cheap, and you can see why upon purchasing. Note: I have no experience of other card readers so cannot say if others are better or worse. However, the poor fitting slots are inexcusable.
